JuuriJuhla-RotFest says thank you

This year’s JuuriJuhla-RotFest is happily over. The public found the event very nicely, in total over 1000 folk music and folk dance enthusiasts visited the festival. Especially popular this year were the small-scale concerts, both Lagstad hembygdsgård and Alberga mansion were crowded with audience. Well visited was also the church concert on Monday, arranged in Leppävaara church for the first time.

A new thing this year was folk dance. The concert ”Nouse lempi liehumahan!” in the Sello Hall presented an impressive cross-section of Finnish folk dance – from speedy Carelian mood to farce and touching war-time-memories. Folk dance was featured also at the Children’s Saturday, which gathered a lot of people to for example listen to the Pilpatus-playing and join Mikko Perkoila’s instrument building workshop.

Emma Salokoski and Ilmiliekki Quartet performed in the Sello Hall for an enthusiastic audience. Jukka Hauru called the project quite a risk in his review (Helsingin Sanomat 9.4.) and noted that ”the combination of Swedish-speaking folk songs and art jazz must be the most non-commercial you can think of besides opera”, but praised the artists. “Salokoskis and Verneri Pohjolas melodic cooperation was unique to hear. Salokoskis voice treatment has raised to a new level inspired by Pohjola.”
Three of the JuuriJuhla-concerts were recorded by Yle Radio 1. One was broadcasted directly and the other two will be broadcasted as part of the Folk music nights during spring.

JuuriJuhla-RotFest 2011 will be arranged during week 14. Artistic director is Maria Kalaniemi, internationally acclaimed accordion player and honorary arts professor.

Kirjavat 9.4. Pilpatus-soitot 10.4. Riinat ja Rikut 10.4.

Exceptional audiences at JuuriJuhla Tuesday

The second day of JuuriJuhla-RotFest included daytime dancing as well as archipelago music. Both events gathered some exceptionally big audiences. Over 100 people came to the Finnish-Swedish archipelago night at very intimate Lagstad hembygdsgård and in the foyer of the Sello Hall over 120 danced intensively to live music played by Espoo Accordion Club
The concert in Lagstad was broadcasted live on Yle Radio 1 and you can hear it on the Yle Areena from Wednesday 7th of April and one month forward. More information: www.yleradio1.fi/musiikki/kansanmusiikinilta/.
Ole Nerdrum's review of the opening concert was published in Hufvudstadsbladet 7.4. He praised the Leppävaara church as an excellent concert venue for acoustic music. Special praises went to vocal ensemble MeNaiset and their improvised Metsä (The Forest), a piece where they imitated different bird sounds. Unfortunately the name of the violin soloist was wrong - Kasmir Uusitupa was the soloist of the Uudenmaan Pelimanni Big Band.

Pentikäinen and Savilampi artistic directors for JuuriJuhla 2010

Since the first JuuriJuhla-festival (2003) accordionist, artist professor Maria Kalaniemi has been the artistic director of the festival. This year Kalaniemi will take a year off from JuuriJuhla and concentrate on other tasks.

Artistic directors of JuuriJuhla 2010 are two men living in Espoo and having much experience of the folk music and folk dance field. Pekka Pentikäinen is Master of Music from the Sibelius-Academy and well acquainted with traditional styles on 2 and 5-row accordion, as well as contemporary folk music, new compositions and accordion styles more close to popular music. Pentikäinen performs solo and in several ensembles, for example together with famous schlager singers Vieno Kekkonen and Pirkko Mannola. He is also the leader of folk music group Espoon pelimannit.

Antti Savilampi has done his life work in the field of Finnish folk dance. He is one of Finland's most respected folk dance teachers and choreographers. He has worked for decades as folk dance instructor in among others Suomen Nuorisoseurojen Liitto, Sibelius-Academy and different dance groups. The Huutokatrilli quadrille directed by Savilampi and accompanied by JPP is already a legend.

-We also want to open doors for folk dance, tells executive director Päivi Ylönen-Viiri. In the coming years we also hope to see Nordic folk music bands of high quality at the JuuriJuhla stages.

Next time JuuriJuhla will be arranged 5.-10.4.2010. The program is published in January 2010.
