Wed 19 Dec 7 p.m. Seimiyö (Night at the Manger)

This atmospheric concert is a part of the JuuriJuhla-RotFest folk music event and brings two popular Finnish duos on the same stage. The setlist contains their dearest Christmas songs that they have rearranged with a fresh touch.

The familiar melodies are spiced up with jazz and folk music and take turns with the artists’ instrumental compositions. The vocals are provided by the bright-voiced Johanna Iivanainen, accompanied by the accordion artist Maria Kalaniemi, guitarist Mikko Iivanainen and pianist Timo Alakotila.

The concert belongs to a tour named after a Tommy Tabermann poem that accompanies the two duos’ first album together. The touching concert provides a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and fills minds with Christmas spirit.

Johanna Iivanainen’s fresh and uncomplicated performances and soulful interpretations are highly popular in Finland. Being an astonishingly versatile singer, she has recorded jazz, a cappella, pop, dance and children’s music. In 2002, Johanna received the Louis Armstrong Award, and a year later Sony Electronics Finland and Jazz Finland granted her the first ever Sony Jazz Award.

Mikko Iivanainen has distinguished himself in the Finnish jazz scene with his harmonic depth and versatile sound. A master of dynamics, Iivanainen has played in several cutting-edge jazz bands in Finland.

Maria Kalaniemi is an international top musician and a talented composer with a distinct style. Her artistic style draws from many musical genres, and she is one of the most esteemed musicians in Finland. Her lyrically delicate and intensive playing style has gained her faithful listeners from around the world.

Timo Alakotila is one of the sought-after musicians in Finland. His extensive body of work includes concertos, numerous arrangements, and compositions for musical plays and dance performances. His music has for example been played by the BBC Concert Orchestra, UMOJazz Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He is featured in some 200 albums as a producer, musician, composer or arranger.
